Winter Dog Soup Dog Recipe
Preparation: Place meat, barley, vegetables, and broth powder in a large soup kettle; add the water and let it boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the soup, covered, for 30 minutes. Serve hot over kibble. You can make about 8 quarts of soup with this recipe.
Variation: Summer Dog Soup Use seasonally available summer vegetables. Substitute bulgur for barley and do not add until soup is cooked. At that point, stir it in bulgur and let it soak until softened.
Ingredients:
- 4 pounds chicken gizzards and hearts or beef heart, coarsely chopped
- 4 cups wholegrain hulled or Scotch barley
- Cut-up seasonal vegetables as available: carrots, onions, whole garlic claves, cabbage, and others
- 2 teaspoons vegetable broth powder
- 4 quarts water
- Kibble
Note: Phebe's owner, Marie, says, "Phebe knows just when I am cooking 'her' soup, and she takes a special interest in the process. I'm sure it is very tasty, as Phebe does a sort of mazurka while smacking her lips when her dish is filled."
Chicken gizzards and hearts deliver, respectively, 91 and 84 grams of protein per pound. That's a higher amount than sirloin steak, and at a quarter of the price.
