Steamed Broccoli With Cheese Sauce Dog Recipe
Preparation:
- Use a sharp paring knife to peel skins from broccoli stems. Cut stems into bite-size pieces and place in steamer. Steam broccoli, covered, over boiling water until just tender. The vegetable should be a bright, fresh green.
- Melt the butter in small saucepan over medium-low heat; stir in flour and cook until mixture is golden while broccoli is cooking. Do not permit roux to brown. Add milk slowly, stir constantly. Add cheese and stir until melted. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Make a bed of rice in the dog dish, top with broccoli, and pour on sauce. You can make 6 cups of vegetable and sauce with this recipe.
Ingredients:
- Stems from 2 bunches of broccoli
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese
- Salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Steamed rice
Note: Dogs usually aren't too selective about which part of broccoli they eat. For this reason, it's economical to save the tender florets for yourself and serve the stems to your dog in this appetizing main course. The slightly tougher stems are an outstanding source of roughage as well as of protein, which is increased by the cheese.
