Dog Encounters
Encountering a stray or territorial dog by chance can be scary because one can’t predict the behavior of the dog. Here are some guidelines:

  • speak calmly
  • do not engage the dog in a stare-down because the dog will correctly interpret such behavior as a challenge
  • keep an upright posture; do not put your face and neck near the dog's mouth
  • do not make any sudden or unexpected moves

If you are in an enclosed space, invite the dog to leave with you so that it gets the message of who is in command do not block the dog's exit or prevent it from leaving.
