Amount to Feed
How much can your hamster eat? A Syrian needs, on the average, about a tablespoon of food a day, plus a few supplements such as bits of carrot, apple, or a stalk of celery. Offer the same amount to a Chinese, a Campbell's, a winter white or Roborovski, because these hamsters seem to have a higher metabolism than the Syrians. When you first put the seed mix into the food, your hamster may glean out what it likes best-and who can blame your pet? Some mixes include dried papaya, bananas, raisins, peanuts, almonds, admittedly not quite what a hamster would find in the wild. So they eat more on the first day than they will on the third.
Fresh Foods
Fresh foods can include almost any sort of fruit or vegetable. The only one yo u need to be wary of would be the leafy greens, such as romaine or spinach; however, giving a piece bigger than an inch square can cause temporary diarrhea.
