A HEALTHY & BOUNTIFUL GARDEN
By choosing the right1ocation, materials and implementing the recommended gardening techniques, you've managed to create a lush, bountiful garden of delicacies. Don't undermine your success by neglecting a few of the basics: Once plants are established in your bunny's garden, don't forget to water them regularly. Inspect them for pests and diseases (unhealthy plants will wither or turn gray, yellow or brown), and treat them accordingly if problems arise (see sidebar on P. 30). Contact your local nursery for advice on how to naturally treat plant diseases common to your area.
You'll also need to get down and dirty at least once a week to remove weeds. You may also want to consider putting down mulch in the form of wood bark or another organic material to discourage weed growth and to keep the soil moist.
If you reside in a cold climate, you'll be able to grow herbs and vegetables outdoors during the spring, summer and fallo If you reside in a warmer climate, such as the far West or South, you can grow them year-round. Stagger your crops according to the season in which they thrive best so you can provide your rabbit with a constant variety. Kale, collards and mustard greens do best in cooler weather, for example, while herbs flourish in warmth and plenty of sun.
Take the time to learn as much as you can about each crop you grow so you can perfect your skills as a gardener. Not only will you have fun learning, but your rabbit will love you for it.
