Calcium in geckos

Calcium supplementation of geckos

Many gecko breeders use special methods to provide large amounts of calcium to their animals. One method is to make available at all times calcium carbonate or calcium gluconate powder or RepCal@; place powder in a jar lid or small dish set on the substrate or on a platform in a gecko's vivarium. With species that are known to ingest sand regularly, such as Teratoscincus, calcium carbonate is added and mixed into the sand substrate. With species that are very prolific and have high calcium demands, such as the Madagascan ground gecko (Paradoeura picta), calcium in liquid form or mixed with a watered down baby food may be administered individually with an eyedropper or syringe. Liquid calcium carbonate can be obtained by prescription from a pharmacy.
