Basic Dog Broth Recipe

Basic Dog Broth Recipe

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Place bones in a large roasting pan and roast them 1 hour, turning once or twice to brown on all the sides. Drain off the fat. Place roaster on stove-top burner over medium heat. Add 1 cup of water and deglaze pan, loosening all the browned bits. Reserve deglazed drip-pings.
  3. Heat the oil over medium heat in a large Dutch oven or heavy kettle. Add the onions, celery, and carrots; sauté until the onions are translucent, stir often. Add roasted bones, reserved pan drippings, tomato paste, parsley, salt, peppercorns, and 4 quarts of water. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat and simmer, covered, 2 hours.
  4. To use as a broth, strain the mixture, let it cool to room temperature, and refrigerate. Skim off any fat from the surface and either refrigerate or freeze.
  5. For soup, remove the bones; pour the broth and vegetables over the kibbles. You can make about 3 quarts of broth or 5 quarts of soup with this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 4 pounds meaty beef bones
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • ˝ cup tomato paste
  • 6 sprigs Italian parsley
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 black peppercorns
  • 4 quarts water

Note:
A basic dog broth is necessary to have on hand. The rich flavor will enhance many dishes such as stews and gravies, and, if the broth is not strained, it can be served with all its vegetables over kibble or other dried food.

Don't Leave Home without it
For the peripatetic dog, it is wise to travel with a current health certificate and rabies vaccination certificate. For reentry into the U.S., a rabies certificate is obligatory, and it's best to have with you all the other current vaccination certificates.
